June 15, 2015 - Nicaragau lead by its Chinese investor billionaire Wang Jing have started the Grand Canal by building an access road to a site for actual construction. Even this minor start has been marred by controversy as the project was delayed by non-payment of wages to the project workers.

The Grand Canal is lining up to be a classic East versus West propagranda battle ground with the supporters of the Grand Canal China and Russia showing positive news stories and the West portraying the canal project negatively as a giant boondoggle and ecological disaster.
